About Yuksom
Yuksom is a popular trekking destination in West Sikkim. Kanchenjunga base camp trek and and Dzongri - Goechala trek originates at Yuksom. Unknown to many, Yuksom is the original capital of Sikkim where the first Chogyal, or the king of Sikkim was consecrated by three lamas who came from three directions. The coronation stone is within walking distance of the village.
Yuksom is situated in a valley. The other attractions of Yuksom valley include several historic monasteries such as the Dubdi monastery, the Kathok monastery, and Yangthang Rimpoche Memorial Chorten. There is a small lake at Yuksom known as Kathok lake, which should also be visited.
The nearest major tourist destination from here is Pelling which can be reached in about one and a half hours. NJP rail station and Bagdogra airport are the major transit points that are about 160 km away and may take close to 6 hours to travel given the terrain. Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim is about 120 km away and takes about 5 hours to reach.
