Orientation
Latpanchar is famous for birds, in particular the Rufus Necked Hornbill and other Himalayan birds. The name Latpanchar in the Lepcha language means a place where cane grows. It is adjacent to the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. Our homestay is just 2.5 km from the Latpanchar Bazar area and is surrounded by acres of a garden full of flowers and fruits.
The Latpanchar 6th Mile Homestay is situated at an altitude of about 4,500 feet.
Our 6th Mile Homestay is unique in many ways. Unlike the homestays located in the crowded market area of Latpanchar, this Homestay is totally secluded with trees and gardens all around. It is also closer to the Hub of Hornbill movement in the area. The visitors staying at Latpanchar come down to the 6th mile for a glimpse of the hornbill. Apart from the Hornbill, there are many varieties of Himalayan birds that can be spotted in this region.
The homestay is in a building where the owner stays on the ground floor, with the entire rooftop having been converted into a homestay. Recently, 2 bamboo cottages have been added to the property, with a room in each cottage.
Food and Dining
Food is basic and hygienic; we try to incorporate local ingredients to the best extent possible which are grown totally organic way without the use of any chemical fertilizer.
We are sure you will find the local vegetables and fruits very tasty. We have a large garden all around the Homestay which is our primary source of many spices and fruits. We will try to avoid western or packaged food to the best extent possible. Indian and traditional meals are preferred. We offer both veg and non-veg food options to our guests. Please note food needs to be ordered well in advance as the nearest shop is 2.5 km away. Do not expect hotel-like food here. Any special requirement must be informed at the time of booking and it will be made available only subject to our confirmation in advance.
Location / Accessibility
Latpanchar has gained popularity among tourists primarily as a birding destination. The Rufus Necked Hornbill with its distinct bill and colorful and large size is a bird watcher's delight.
Our 6th Mile Homestay is especially bestowed with a great location and lots of green foliage. Due to this the hornbills often build their nest in our Homestay itself or in its immediate vicinity. This by far has become the greatest attraction and activity for most visitors.
Other activities include sightseeing visits to Latkothi, Sittong, Sunrise point, local monasteries, and so on. You can visit Rabindranath Tagore's haven at Mongpu, where he used to spend time writing. There are exhibits of his photos, paintings, and writings.
Latpanchar Market is 2.5 km away, and Kalijhora is 9 km and about 20 minutes drive. The Ahal Dara viewpoint is located just above a distance of fewer than 500 meters, but the mountain road will travel about 6 km before reaching here. Sittong is about 12 km and Selphu village is about 4 km away.
