Orientation
Rocky Island is a tourist spot on the banks of River Murti at Samsing. The Humro Home Tribeni is located on the riverbed here.
Our lodge here is about 3 km from Samsing Tea Garden. At Rocky Island, the river Murti enters the plains from its mountainous journey that originates close to the Indo-Bhutan border. On both sides of the river, there is a forested hill. The resort is located at an altitude of about 1800 feet or 550 meters above sea level.
Humro Home Rocky Island is a small eco-lodge consisting of 4 rooms. 2 rooms are in the main building whereas 2 cottages are on the adjacent ground. There is an open land of about 1.5 acres in front of the resort that ends on the Murti River. There are several trees on the lodge campus including orange trees that turn orange during the winter months. The eco-resort is located on the main road just across the bridge of the Murti River.
Rocky Island is a small village in the Samsing area. The place was originally called Tribeni as two small streams met here with river Murti. The riverbed is full of small and large rocks leading to the more popular present name of Rocky Island.
Our lodge is located on the eastern side of the river close to the riverbed. The resort is a small eco-friendly initiative by the locals in close collaboration with Humro Home.
Getting there
If you are travelling from New Jalpaiguri (NJP), by far the most important rail station in the region, the distance to Rocky Island is about 85 km and about two hours drive. From Chalsa crossing take the northbound road and drive for 16 km to reach Samsing Tea Garden. From here our eco-resort is a further 3 km on an unpaved road.
Food and Dining
Clean basic food is served. The nearest market at Meteli is about 10 km away. Hence last moment requirements cannot be served. Any special requirements must be communicated well in advance and taken confirmation before arrival.
Breakfast consists of Puri Sabji Chai, and Lunch is primarily of rice, dal, vegetables and fish. Dinner mostly replaces fish with chicken. Tea and snacks are served in the evening. Food is sufficient and clean.
Location / Accessibility
On both sides of the river, there are hills which are ideal for adventure treks and rock climbing. Group activities such as camping, rock climbing, trekking, river crossing etc. can be arranged at the eco-resort on advance notice. Camps can be organised on the riverbank for children groups or school/college groups here. If you are travelling on your own, you may take a hike in the surrounding hills and forests on your own, or be assisted by our local guides. The river itself is quite safe for spending a day on its banks. Tourists prefer to spend hours on the river listening to the music of the fast-flowing river or taking a bath in it. Tourists interested in Bird watching may also find our eco-resort ideal to spend a morning or an evening listening to the chirping birds. Sightseeing The location of Samsing is quite close to the most popular forest of Dooars, the Gorumara National Park. It takes about an hour to reach the Gorumara forest check post from the resort. There are several forest safari options available at Gorumara. The Jhalong Bindu area is also quite nearby. There is a short route through Kumani village which takes about an hour to reach Jaldhaka – Jhalong – Bindu area.
Being located at a higher elevation among hills and dense forests, the weather at Humro Home here is quite comfortable throughout the year. The summer temperature rarely crosses 30 C whereas in winter it hovers around 10 C. Rainy season brings its own attraction with lush greenery on all sides.

All vehicles can travel to our lodge here, vehicles with low ground clearance used to have problems in the past due to the bad condition of the last 3 kilometres of the road. The road is however maintained now and any vehicle can travel here easily. The nearest rail station is Chalsa (about 19 km). However, no long-distance train has a halt here. A safer bet is to get down at Malbazar which is a further 9 km from Chalsa. Kanchan Kanya Express coming from Kolkata as well as Mahananda Express coming from Delhi has a stoppage here.
Once you reach Samsing, drive northbound towards Suntalekhola through the only arterial road, Cross the samsing market area and drive for about 500 meters and you will find a diversion to your right going towards Rocky Island. Drive about a kilometre through this road to reach the Rocky Island bridge over river Murti. Cross the bridge and on your right is Humro Home Rocky Island.
